My name is Allie and I am a junior at Brigham Young University studying Public Health. My little brother has Aspergers disorder. He’s my little brother and my family and I could love him no more, he is our world! However, my brother sometimes acts differently than kids his age and needs special support and care at home, school, church, and at play. At times this can be frustrating for both us and my younger brother. As I, my family, members of school districts and of the community become more educated and knowledgeable about this topic the more we can help and understand and effectively communicate and work with individuals like my brother who are diagnosed with Autism.
Kids and people with Autism are not much different than you and I, they enjoy ice cream and watching movies, they are scared of the dark, they enjoy spending time with their family. However, sometimes they do need more TLC, extra time, and certain alterations made so they can live comfortably and excel as people and citizens of the world. Some need more assistance than others, but they all share similar attributes and each situation can benefit and learn from the other.
As I come to learn more about Autism and Aspergers disorder I learn more how to serve, love, and interact my younger brother and the many people I know who are diagnosed with Autism. Join me in taking an active stand, becoming knowledgeable, and helping these individuals and their families enjoy life and excel to become the best they can be.
