Aspergers and about other forms of Autism

About January 20, 2010

Autism is a developmental disorder appearing in the first 3 years of live. This disorder affects the brain’s development of social and communication skills. (Google health)  There is a saying “if you ‘ve met one person with Autism, then you’ve met one person with Autism”.  Autism is considered to be a spectrum disorder meaning that there are many forms of autism and not every person with autism exhibits the same symptoms.  The array of symptoms includes gastro-intestinal problems, seizure problems, delay in social development, and delay in emotional development, delayed speech and cognitive development, difficulty in maintaining eye contact, difficulty in understanding emotions and social cues, and inability to understand another perspective.  1/10 children are diagnosed with autism

Aspergers is a form of Autism.  It is on the “functional” side of autism where they are said to have normal “language and cognitive skills”.  Peoples diagnosed with Aspergers are said to have a “dash of autism”, They are significantly underdeveloped socially, but are functional.

There is not one cookie cutter treatment for Autism and different types of Autism including Aspergers.  Some treatments are being developed at this time, but a few popular developments include a Gluten free diet and occupational therapy.

I am a sister of someone with Aspergers syndrom.  The purpose of this blog is to educate and inform the general public what Autism is, to bring together families of loved one’s with Autism, and to discuss current events relating to the Autism spectrum and specifically the Aspergers corner of Autism.

This was interesting. My son was tested for Aspergers twice but they determined that he does not have it. He has some characteristics but has grown out of most of them. I did not realize it was a problem in Africa

  2. I am a senior in a health science major and I hadn’t even heard of Aspergers until this semester! This blog has really helped me get-in-the-know! Raising awareness is so important; thank you for educating me.

This is great information to be aware of. A friend of mine has a brother with Asperger’s and it’s good to know more information about it and how it affects her brother and her family.
